The tradition of celebrating Navarathri festival by the royal family of Travancore has been continuing for centuries. Originally held in Padmanabhapuram, now a part of Tamil Nadu, the festival later late came to be held in Thiruvananthapuram after Maharaja Swathi Tirunal shifted the capital of Travancore to Thiruvananthapuram.
The idol of Goddess Saraswathi believed to have been handed over to a Chera King and then came into the royal family after the formation of the Venad Swarupam and Travancore samasthana, is worshipped in a temple within the Padmanabhapuram palace. The idol is brought to Thiruvananthapuram every year for the festival. This is a three-day journey of the goddess on an elephant.
Maharaja Swathi Tirunal, a connoisseur of arts and music, composed nine kritis and these are sung as the main item each day during the festival. The Navarathri Mandapam concerts are set in traditional ambience and the timings are strictly adhered to. Beginning at 6 p.m. the concerts end at 8.30 p.m. and the audience remains seated through the concert. No applause, no late-entry and no early leaving the venue is followed even today. There are also other restrictions typical to the temples in Kerala.
This year the Navarathri Mandapam concerts will be held from Oct. 10 to 18, 2018.
