Ettayapuram is a small town in Thoothukudi district with a history that dates back to the Pandya kings. Muthuswamy Dikshitar, one of the Trinity of Carnatic music (born in 1775) attained mukthi on a Deepavali day in 1835 in Ettayapuram. His samadhi is now a built-up hall in a simple design. The town is also the birthplace of the Tamil poet Subramanya Bharathi and the poet's memorial lies diagonally opposite the Dikshitar memorial.
One can reach Ettayapuram from Madurai, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi. But it is easier to alight at Kovilpatti railway station and travel 15 km by road.
